Colin Matthews has recently developed a library of materials on chronic pain for the Pain Management Unit (PMU) at Poole Hospital. This library consists of books, DVDs, CDs, tapes and web-based information for health professionals and patients. Where appropriate, patients will be provided with information on good self-help resources in addition to existing treatment. Practitioner books on pain management are mainly recent publications and inform staff working with patients suffering chronic pain of the latest recommended interventions and research findings

The materials cover the most common causes of chronic pain including fibromyalgia, arthritis and cancer and address the psychological, social and physical aspects of pain. It is envisaged that the library will be extended to the PMUs at Bournemouth, Christchurch and Dorchester.

The pain management links to the right list all the web-based resources recommended to the PMU. A complete list of the materials selected for the library will appear on this site in due course.

Colin would like to thank the following publishers for providing inspection copies of books so that practitioners could evaluate them for the scheme:

Transworld
Constable & Robinson
Taylor and Francis Group
Piatkus Books
Sheldon Press
Oxford University Press
Talking Life
Choices - kids with arthritis
John Wiley
Cambridge University Press
Beckmann

The pain management unit is keen on using Colin's expertise further to inform a wider public about the good quality self-help books identified. It is hoped that a scheme similar to the child and family scheme and the book prescription scheme that covers management of chronic pain could be rolled out nationwide.
